about

‘Why We Try’ released on October 21st 2021, showcases a different avenue of Emma Edel’s ever-evolving sound. The playful, infectious Pop song, written at the beginning of 2020, discusses craving someone’s presence over anything materialistic or superficial. It explores the disagreements that can arise between two people that have different love languages, while discussing the reasons ‘Why’ you ‘Try’ without forcing it.
The Chill Pop Track opens with a nostalgic-like sound bed that is quickly greeted by Edel’s upfront dream-like vocals. The laid-back track blends lavish guitar progressions, modern synths, thick basslines and a simple retro-like drum beat. The track is balanced by Edel’s conversational layered vocals that develop throughout the track, which feels much more personal than her previous releases. Why We Try’s catchy hook flourishes as the song progresses and is complimented by Edel’s honest songwriting, her crisp sleek vocals and the songs refreshing production. Produced remotely with Alex O' Keeffe over Zoom at the beginning of this year, Emma then recorded her vocals in studio with Adam Shanahan once lockdown lifted.

lyrics

Lay with me to understand
Talk to me and hold my hand
It’s the reason why we try
No need to fight
It’s why we try

Why do we try all the simple things
I’m not asking you for diamond rings
Not in the habit of wanting to ask you
What I need is something overdue
It’s not what we need to breathe
But there’s nothing wrong with luxury
And I can tell you ‘bout a million things I like
Doesn’t matter though if you can’t stay the night

What we lack in I don’t even know
Gotta feeling that I’ll never wanna go
All the time spent apart
Leaves a space in my heart

Lay with me to understand
Talk to me and hold my hand
It’s the reason why we try
No need to fight
It’s why we try
You’ve an easy way to say
Excusing how you misbehave
It’s the reason why we try
No need to fight
It’s why we try

It’s amazing how you see it through
Keep me guessing I can’t handle you
I can’t help it but adore your every move
All your qualities I never knew were true
I wanna see if we can make the end
Even if we just play pretend
I got my eyes on no one else but you
You got me hoping that you only see me too

What we lack in I don’t even know
Gotta feeling that I’ll never wanna go
All the time spent apart
Leaves a space in my heart

Lay with me to understand
Talk to me and hold my hand
It’s the reason why we try
No need to fight
It’s why we try
You’ve an easy way to say
Excusing how you misbehave
It’s the reason why we try
No need to fight
It’s why we try

No need to push for it (why we try now)
I gotta bad habit (why we try now)
And I can’t handle it
I can’t handle it
I can’t handle it

No need to push for it (why we try now)
I gotta bad habit (why we try now)
And I can’t handle it
I can’t handle it

Lay with me to understand
Talk to me and hold my hand
It’s the reason why we try
No need to fight
It’s why we try
You’ve an easy way to say (you’ve an easy way to say)
Excusing how you misbehave (excusing how you misbehave)
It’s the reason why we try
No need to fight
It’s why we try

No need to push for it (why we try now)
I gotta bad habit (why we try now)
And I can’t handle it
I can’t handle it
I can’t handle it

No need to push for it (why we try now)
I gotta bad habit (why we try now)
And I can’t handle it
I can’t handle it
I can’t handle it
